Baking and Pastry Arts Degree

A derivative of culinary arts is the Baking and Pastry Arts Degree, focusing on the creation of baked products to satisfy the sweet tooth of the clientele. Another critical requirement for a pastry chef job is attention to detail since the smallest change in recipe or design can be crucial to the finished product.

Courses that are specific to a Baking and Pastry Arts Degree include cakes and decorations, principles of chocolate works, pastries and desserts production, classical and specialty desserts and pastry presentation concepts. An internship in baking and pastry arts will give the students extensive hands-on experience in pastry making and baking. An online degree is one way of studying for this program. Employment starts at entry-level for most graduates and learning from work experience builds up the pastry chef’s career. Formal education is an advantage, as employers will prefer those with a scientific background over experience only. The work environment is usually in the kitchens of big hotels and resorts or graduates may opt to establish their own patisserie or bakery.

Salaries for pastry chefs at any level are usually higher by 10 percent than their counterparts in other culinary specialties. A baker may start at $11 to $17 per hour and increase with experience and skills learned on the job.
